Cannabis Infused Coconut Oil

Today I'm sharing my process for making a Cannabis Infused Coconut Oil.  The beauty of this medicine is it's versatility.  It can be used in creating both tasty edibles and healing topicals.

You will notice that my recipe uses a mixture of buds, sugar leaf trim & fan leaf trim.  I have found that using all parts of the plant is the best way to make this.  Each part of the plant holds cannabinoids in different concentrations.  By using a whole plant mixture (minus stems) it makes a well balanced medicine that is easily processed by the body in both a topical treatment and as an edible.

What you will need:
Steeping the plant matter
  • Crockpot
  • RO (reverse osmosis) water, or distilled water
  • Organic Coconut Oil
  • Dried and cured medical marijuana buds, sugar leaf trim and fan leaf trim
  • A french coffee press or other straining device that you can press out the liquid from the material
  • A large bowl or pot
  • Latex or nitrile gloves
  • A gold coffee filter or fine sieve

Here's the recipe for 1 Cup of Coconut oil.  You can easily double, triple or whatever you like.

  1. In your crockpot add 1 Cup of organic Coconut Oil.  Turn your crock pot on low and allow the oil to melt into a liquid.
  2. Once the coconut oil has melted add 2 ounces of dried plant material.  I like to use about 1/3 dried buds, 1/3 dry fan leaf trim, and 1/3 sugar leaf trim. It's not important to make these exact 3rds but it is key that your total dried plant matter is a total of 2 ounces for every cup of coconut oil.
  3. add 5-6 cups of your RO or Distilled water.  IMPORTANT:  some folks make this without the water and just mix the fat with the plant matter.  I do not recommend doing it that way.  The water acts as a filter for a large amount of the chlorophyll as well as prevents your mixture from becoming too hot and scalding or cooking off the precious cannabinoids which you are after.
  4. Turn your crock pot on high.  Stir your mixture every hour.  This will agitate the plant matter in the oil and help to infuse the cannabinoids into the oil.
  5. After 1 hour turn your crock pot onto low or warm and allow this mixture to cook and steep for at least 4 hours but up to 24 hours.
  6. Once you've reached the desired time, turn off your crock pot and allow this mixture to cool down to a temperature you can work with easily without burning yourself.
  7. Using a ladle or large spoon, scoop your mixture into your clean french press coffee maker.  Press the mixture to strain out the plant matter and pour the liquid into a large bowl or pot.  This may take several pressings depending on the size of your french press.  If you are not using a french press you can use a wire sieve to strain out the liquid.  Be sure to glove up and squeeze out the liquid by hand.
  8. When you have strained out all of the plant matter cover your bowl or pot (which now contains a mixture of water and oil) and place it into the refrigerator overnight.
  9. Once your liquid has chilled overnight it will have seperated into 2 layers.  Remove the hardened coconut oil from the top and drain on a paper towel.  Discard the water.
  10. At this point you may notice there are still some fine particles attached to the bottom of your hardened coconut oil.  To remove these you will want to remelt the hardened coconut oil in a pot over low heat.  Once this is melted back into a liquid strain it through a fine sieve or your gold coffee filter.
  11. Place this liquid back into the refrigerator to solidify.
Now you have a strong coconut oil infusion which can be used in edibles as well as topicals.  This mixture will store well in the fridge or freezer.

I like to place 1/4 Cup premeasured amounts into zippered bags and keep it in the freezer.  When I'm ready to make a recipe I can just pull out the amount I need and thaw it out and add it to the recipe.

You can use this infused coconut oil straight on your skin as an effective topical treatment or add it into your favorite topical recipes like my THChristi Tub Treats

For edibles, you can easily substitute 1:1 solidified coconut oil for butter, or melted coconut oil for other oils in your favorite recipes.  Or try making my 99% Organic Coconut Oatmeal Cookies

    3. Thank you for this article. I am new to the community and find it very validating that this information is easily accessible and not extremely difficult to allow patients like me to make option and feel better on our terms. So thank you again. I Love coconut oil. I oil pull every night ( plain) and my mouth feels so clean and amazing. I also
love things cold. I take the coconut oil while it's playable and my husband and I roll small circle infused coconut balls and freeze them. I guess you can drizzle them in chocolate, but they are small. I even make some plain, for after I have a few, just to freshen my breath. I find that this is such a great way for me to not have to rely on vapors get all the time and I can have several frozen balls and feel less pain and anxiety- now I go to the park and even to the store for first time in I can't even remember when. They remind me of the frozen ice cream, that you buy at carnivals or amusement parks.

  2. for steps 4 and 5, is the water allowed to come to a boil after you put it on high? or is that too hot?

    ReplyDelete

    1. It's ok if it comes to a boil. Water boils at 212* Fahrenheit so it's not a problem but when I see the crockpot boiling I usually turn it down to warm or low setting

  3. How about sewing the plant matter into a muslin cloth before cooking; would that have an affect with the infusion?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I like to keep the cannabis loose in the heating mixture to be sure that it's getting contact with the coconut oil as it heats. You could try doing the muslin bag but it might not infuse as well. A better option might be pouring it through the muslin at the end and squeezing that out?

  4. If you are using all buds, what ratio would you suggest for oil to buds?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Using all buds you can make a potent oil using 1/2 oz to1 oz per cup of coconut oil.

      Delete
    2. You said to use at lease 19(18.9999) g of bud, witch is 1/3 of 2 oz, in the original recipe. So how could using just 1/2 oz be enough?

      Delete
    3. If you want to get the results I am getting please follow the recipe as written. If you are working with all buds your finished oil is going to be more psychoactive as buds are more potent in THC than the combination of buds and trim material but the finished oil will have less CBD and CBN.

      Delete
    4. This is why I've said between 1/2 ounce and a full ounce.

  5. Could I use this in a pen that takes concentrates?

    ReplyDelete

    1. This isn't a good option for a vape pen because the cannabis is decarboxylated in the cooking process. For your concentrate pen you want to use something like bho, co2 oil, full melt water hash and concentrates like that

  9. Help!! I began the boil making process exactly as your recipe states. After 1 hour I went to check the progress and as luck would have it my crock pot was cold. I got a heavy bottom pan and put the mixture in it and put it on lowest temp and simmered (never boiled) for 2 1/2 hours. There was already some prominent sage green color present and I thought I should take it off heat and let it sit. I did this for 1 hour and then when I checked it, it wasn't as green as it was. So...I put it back on simmer for an hour-the color was back, so I put it into a glass container covered with saran wrap and put it into fridge. It is now hardened and looks and tastes ok. I am wondering if I should use the cannabis I strained to attempt to make a smaller batch tomorrow when I purchase a new crock pot, or should I put the whole shebang into the new crock and let it simmer for 12 or so more hours and hope for the best?? This is the first time I have made this and used good bud because that is all I had when I decided I had to make the oil asap. Please help/comment asap as I really am stuck. The few people I have asked what they would do had NO idea what they or I should do. Look forward to your reply. Thanks in advance for your help. By the way I love your site and your reviews are the best. Waiting to Exhale in Massachusetts. :)

P.S. I'm making chocolates with coconut oil. Got a great recipe you can share?

    1. I would try to remove the vermiculite and any other foreign material before adding your plant matter into your crock pot. My decarb I do at 250• F for between 30-60 minutes. I'm sure there are other methods but this is the research I found here http://www.marijuanagrowershq.com/decarboxylating-cannabis-turning-thca-into-thc/

    2. I don't have a cocnut oil chocolate recipe. But I'll work on one and see what I can come up with. Take care when adding coconut oil to melted chocolate. If your ratio of cocnut oil is too high it may prevent the chocolate from hardening properly in my past experience

      Delete
    3. fytocel is a good alternative for vermiculite, although i'm not sure if it's any less likely to get stuck in the nooks and crannies of your herb :)

    4. The skunkfarm THC chart is very useful. Best batch of coconut oil yet.. and super easy. Grind up flowers really good. Heat twice the volume of coconut oil in a small pyrex dish at 250F .. once the oil is hot. Stir in flowers and bake for 30 minutes while low heating a larger pyrex container with some water. Pour oil and flowers through cheesecloth in warm water. Stir and set in freezer until green oil solidifies on top. Remove water and viola!!

anyway...the point :) ---> why does it take so long? couldn't it work quicker if you stay on top of it, stirring often?

    1. Hi Mark. I'm not sure if you stand over this and stir your mix constantly you might be able to reduce the time. I've found about 4 hours in the crockpot is the very least amount of time I like to run my oil. Generally I let this simmer up to 24 hours but only stirring occasionally.

  15. Hi THChristi,

I have a question regarding this recipe.

What is the potency if I follow all your steps 100% what will be the final potency??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Potency of this recipe is variable depending on the strain of cannabis you use to make it. For example if you use a high CBD strain like Harlequin you will have a high CBD oil which will give you a lot of pain relief without a heady Stoney effect. If you use a high THC strain then you will have a very heady oil. As with all if my cannabis recipes your final results will vary depending on your starting material. Remember this adage "garbage in, garbage out".

    1. Sorry. You'll have to do the math. In order to true ly know your potency your best bet is having it lab tested but that's only possible in states with legal medical marijuana. Without potency testing it's all guess work.

    1. Hi Rosie. This is not a substitute for RSO. RSO is a high THC medical extraction using either naptha or alcohol for a chemical extraction. This coconut oil cannot extract at such a high ratio as those chemical extractions. That being said it is still very medicinal and can be used in conjunction with an RSO treatment to counter pain and other symptoms

  29. How much butter can I expect to end up with?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Depending on how well you are able to press it out. I usually lose about 1/8th cup of coconut oil per cup I started with. If you're using butter you will lose a bit more because the butter that you wind up with is clarified. To counter act that with butter just start with 1 1/4 cup butter for every cup you want to get at the end.

  33. Is it absolutely necessary to decarb the bud first for edibles? I thought decarboxylation happened during the cooking process enough to not have to decarb it in the oven. I know decarboxylation is to turn the non active thc into active thc but wouldn't this process take place anyway during the cook, assuming it's cooked at the right amount of time?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is not absolutely necessary. The cannabis will decarb to some degree in the cooking process. However if you do decarb your material first it will be far more active. I have made butter using both methods and have found that using material that has first been decarbbed makes for a much more potent and active butter. Try doing a side by side comparison and see what a difference it makes. :)

    2. So what's a good decarb temp and time?

      Delete
    3. I use a chart I found at marijuanagrowhq.com for kief I decarb at 250 for 30 minutes. For trim and buds I decarb at 250 for 30-60 minutes depending on th thickness of the material on my baking sheet

  34. What temperature do you recommend when baking edibles? I've seen ppl say not to go above 275 degrees F and some say you can heat it up all the way to 350 degrees F and even to 375 degrees F. I try to stay at or around 325-330 degrees F just to be on the safe side but is that still too hot?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. When making baked goods I find it is safe up to 350. The thermostat in the oven is measuring the temp of the oven, not the actual baked goods. If you use an infrared thermometer you will find the naked goods never reach that actual temp. 350 is the top temp I use though just to be sure none of my cannabinoids are being lost. Hope that helps :)

Being that I am extremely novice can you please tell me simply why I should use the alcohol method and what I can use with it or why I should make the coconut oil and what I could do with that?also should I put the material in the oven? I'll leave your comment up and maybe someone on here will have some advice. Personally I just toss anything that gets toy or any mold. It's a loss but if rather take the loss than use it in making medicines. The effort and time spent making topicals and edibles is best used with quality starting material IMHO

    1. The distiller water will not reduce potency. It simply provides a filter for the chlorophyll and reduces the "weedy" flavor from your finished oil. It also helps to regulate the heat in this process keeping the entire mixture from burning or cooking off the cannabinoids due to excessive heat.

As far as using the material once you squeeze/press out the oil... You won't want to smoke it for sure. What you can do is make http://triiiches.blogspot.com/2013/08/dank-doggie-biscuits.html?m=1

    1. Yes. Dry them and use for topical recipes. There is medicinal value even in the leaves

  50. Hello, this might be a silly question. I friend of mine harvested one plant today. He gave me a kitchen garbage FULL of the big leaves (water leaves??) and one stalk/stem with buds and leaves. I have no interest in using any of this for a "high", but I don't know what to do with this pile of leaves?! Should I let it all dry out? And do I have to do SOMEthing with this quantity all at once? All of a sudden it seems like I've this huge project on my hands to use this stuff in some way, but I've no clue. I considered making a salve/balm because I do have lower back pain, but no way that alone is going to use up all this! Any suggestions?? Thank you ~Jenn
